How Often Should I Change My HVAC Filter?

Category: Furnace

Author: Pat Adams

One of the simplest (and most overlooked!) ways to keep your home comfortable is by regularly changing your HVAC filter!

Between dust, pet hair, and who-knows-what-else floating around, your HVAC filter traps those particles and (over time) gets clogged. A dirty filter means your system has to work harder – often leading to higher bills, inefficient heating or cooling, and even long-term damage to the system.

How Often Should You Change It?

The short answer: it depends. Here are some guidelines to help you decide:

  • Every 30 days: If you have pets, allergies, or live in a dusty area.
  • Every 60–90 days: For the average home without pets or allergies.
  • Every 6 months: If you’re using a high-quality filter and your system doesn’t get heavy use (like a vacation home).

Quick Tip

Set a reminder on your phone or mark your calendar. It’s easy to forget, but swapping out your HVAC filter is one of the cheapest and most effective ways to keep your system running smoothly. A few minutes of effort now can save you from costly repairs later.

And word to the wise . . .
