Time to heat things up! When your furnace stops blowing hot air, it can feel like you’re left out in the cold — literally. No need to panic — there are several reasons this might happen. Our Reliant team has a few simple tricks to make sure you’re feeling cozy again in no time!
Here are some of the top culprits that could be behind your furnace’s lack of heat:
1. Thermostat Settings
This may seem obvious, but double-check your thermostat settings. Ensure it’s set to “Heat” and not “Fan” or “Cool.” Also, confirm that the temperature is set high enough to trigger the furnace.
2. Dirty Air Filter
A clogged air filter can restrict airflow, causing your furnace to overheat and shut off. Replace the filter if it’s dirty, and make a habit of changing it every one to three months during the colder seasons.
3. Pilot Light Issues
For older furnaces, a pilot light that has gone out is a common issue. If this happens, follow your furnace’s manual to safely relight it.
4. Tripped Circuit Breaker
Your furnace relies on electricity to operate, even if it uses gas for heating. Check your breaker panel to ensure the circuit hasn’t tripped.
5. Ductwork Problems
Sometimes the furnace is working fine, but the ductwork is leaking or blocked, which prevents hot air from reaching rooms. Inspect accessible ducts for issues.
