Reducing Home Allergens

If you’re sneezing, coughing, or experiencing itchy eyes inside your home, it’s time to tackle allergens head-on. Fortunately, you don’t need a hazmat suit. Our Reliant team has a few simple tricks to help you breathe a little easier.

Start with Your HVAC System

Your home’s HVAC system plays a HUGE role in maintaining the air quality inside. Dust, pollen, and other particles can accumulate in your system, causing them to circulate throughout your living space. But good news – these simple HVAC maintenance to-do’s can help significantly reduce the allergens in your home:

Here’s what you can do:

  1. Change the air filter regularly. A high-quality filter traps allergens before they enter your living spaces. Aim to change it every 1-3 months. (If you hate having one more to-do, you may want to look into our monthly Comfort Club program that does all the HVAC adulting for you. More info on that below.)
  2. Clean air ducts – Dust and debris build up in your ducts over time, so scheduling a professional cleaning can help reduce the spread of allergens.
  3. Use an HVAC with humidity control – Mold and dust mites thrive in high humidity. Keeping humidity between 30-50% can prevent these allergens from growing.

Additional Tips to Reduce Allergens at Home

While your HVAC system is key, there are other areas of your home you should focus on to further reduce allergens:

  • Vacuum frequently with a HEPA filter vacuum to trap dust and pet dander. (Or even get a Roomba if you’re feeling overwhelmed. No shame in that!)
  • Wash bedding in hot water weekly to kill dust mites.
  • Keep windows closed during high pollen seasons.
  • Use allergy-friendly bedding like pillow and mattress covers.
  • Minimize clutter where dust can collect.
